'Top Gun' Star Val Kilmer Reveals He ‘Didn’t Want the Part’

Val Kilmer almost walked away from one of the most iconic films of his career.

While he famously played Iceman in the 1986 action blockbuster “Top Gun,” the 60-year-old has now disclosed he “didn’t care about the film” when he was auditioning for the role.

The actor opens up about the casting process in an excerpt from his new memoir “I’m Your Huckleberry,” reported the Daily Beast.

“I didn’t want the part. I didn’t care about the film. The story didn’t interest me,” Kilmer wrote . “My agent, who also represented Tom Cruise, basically tortured me into at least meeting Tony Scott, saying he was one of the hottest directors in town.”

While the actor only had a few movie credits to his name at the time, Kilmer was less than enthusiastic in his audition portraying Cruise’s rival, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

“I wore oversize gonky Australian shorts in nausea green,” he added. “I read the lines indifferently. And yet, amazingly, I was told I had the part. I felt more deflated than inflated. I had to get out of there.”

After reluctantly taking the role, “Top Gun” became one of the biggest blockbuster films of the year and earned over $350 million worldwide.

During an appearance on “Good Morning America,” he discussed what it was like to reunite with Cruise on the upcoming sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick.”

“It was absolutely moving,” Kilmer said. “I really was surprised. And Tom was wearing his jacket, his original jacket from the first movie, it was just very moving.”

Kilmer, who was diagnosed with throat cancer a few years ago, also gave an update on his health after undergoing a tracheotomy.

"I feel a lot better than I sound, but I feel wonderful," he said. "I was diagnosed with throat cancer which healed very quickly. This is a tracheotomy to help me breathe because my glands in my throat swelled up as well."

When asked what he missed most about his old voice, the actor responded: "That I had one! And that I didn’t laugh like a pirate."

“Top Gun: Maverick” is set to hit theaters on December 23rd.
