Mel Gibson and Danny Glover Set to Reprise Roles in 'Lethal Weapon 5'

A fifth and final “Lethal Weapon” is in the works.

Original stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are set to reprise their characters in the film. Dan Lin, producer on the “Lethal Weapon” TV series, revealed the news during The Hollywood Reporter's Producers Roundtable on Tuesday.

According to Lin, “Lethal Weapon 5” will take place 22 years after the fourth film’s release in 1998 and catch up with detective duo, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh.

During the announcement, Lin also revealed that the sequel would be the last installment in the franchise.

“We're trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie. And Dick Donner's coming back. The original cast is coming back. And it's just amazing. The story is very personal to him,” he said referring to the director behind all four installments.

The sequel hasn’t received the official green light, but both “Mel and Danny are ready to go,” according to Lin. He explained that the project remains in pre-production because the script is being fine-tuned.

According to Daily Mail, Donner has been ready for a sequel since 2018 when he teased his vision for a “darker” film.

At the time, he clarified that he didn’t think it would happen because the idea was being shot down by the movie studio.

“I'm ready to do 5. It's called Lethal Finale. It's very dark. And we were all set to go, and now Warner Bros. is doing their old-fashioned tricks,” he said.

The original “Lethal Weapon” debuted in 1987 and birthed three sequels and a brief TV series starring Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans.

Earlier last week, Billy Murray confirmed he will be reprising his role in a "Ghostbusters" sequel.
