Behind the Beards: Watch the ZZ Top Documentary Trailer

The blues rock legends are celebrating 50 years

July 25, 2019

The first thing you notice is the beards, but you stay for the blues rock. ZZ Top is celebrating 50 years with a tour and a documentary, and we’re getting our first look at the trailer for ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.

The clip provides a glimpse into how “three oddball teenage bluesmen became one of the biggest, most beloved bands on the planet, all while maintaining a surrealist mystique that continues to intrigue fans.”

ZZ Top was what became known as a classic rock band first, releasing their debut album in 1970 and scoring one of their first radio hits a few years later with “La Grange.” But they were still going strong when MTV came along in the 80s, and they harnessed the medium to score a second decade of hits like “Sharp Dressed Man” and Legs.”

The documentary captures it all, along with the challenging times most bands with longevity face, and features interviews with Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and Billy Bob Thornton. ZZ Top Guitarist and vocalist Billy Gibbons says the film will surely be educational.

“I think even our most steadfast fans will find themselves surprised by what they learn about those men behind the beards and cheap sunglasses,” Gibbons said. “There we are, up there on the silver screen and it’s something we’re delighted to share with fans of all stripes.”

ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas will premiere on August 13 in Hollywood. The band’s 50th anniversary tour begins three days later in Ridgefield, WA and runs through November 9 in Shreveport, LA. Get the full list of dates here.
